Hello everyone,

I just wanted to share a cool email I just got from Kel Bartlett. He’s 70 years young and from Sandstone Point, located in Queensland, Australia. Kel shares his cool story about getting back into RC modeling after 30 years! I would like to send Kel a BIG Thank you for sending us his story and pictures of his awesome planes. I am just blown away at how nice his Mig-29 looks! great job Kel!

Happy Flying Kel,

Paul

( Kel’s Awesome Story from his email to us)

—————————————————————————————-

Hi Paul,

My story is just a little bit different to most that you might hear about and I hope you find it interesting.

I started aero-modelling when I was just 14years of age. I am now 70 years young but I have not built a plane for at least the last 30 odd years. I have about 5 models in various stages of building or repair and I have packed and unpacked those planes so many times in my changes of address. Anyway, I have retired from the workforce now and moved again with my wife to a delightful part of Queensland , Australia called Sandstone Point.

Now, here is the intriguing part. About 3 months ago I received a parcel in the post addressed to a guy down the street a bit. It looked like a model gas engine so I told my wife that I would take it down to him a see what “he was up to” Chris showed me what he was doing with models and we ended up being good friends. He was so excited to have another modeller so close to him that he showed me some websites, RCFoamFighters.com being one of the sites. —- thanks Chris!

I had built pllanes using foam for wing cores but I had not contemplated using foam for a complete plane.Chris suggested that I build one of your Foam Fighters and it didn’t take much coaxing. I decided that I would build the FF-15 pretty much as per your plan but I used Coreflute (Real Estate signs) again on Chris’s persistance. That plane is a little beauty and I have it ready for the skies again after putting it into the deck 4 times. (although all of those years in Aeromodelling I never did get to the stage of being a proficient pilot before giving it a way ( 3 of those prangs it literally bounced but the fourth effort made it necessary to replace a section of the nose and rebuild the battery case. This coreflute is just something else!

After experiencing first hand the results of my first attempt at a Foam Fighter I decided to build another one. I have been facinated with the Mig-29 and I managed to get a plan that is very similar in concept to yours so I was underway again.

The plan suggested using 6mm.Depron but I now build with 3mm. Corflute so I decided to laminate all surfaces to achieve 6mm. required thickness and gaining some strength along the way at the expense of very small amount of weight gain. There is no need to bore you with details of the building because it is the same process that FoamFighters use but after seeing the Mig-29 almost finished I decided to add some strength to the fuselage and give the Mig some of it’s inherent lines of beauty by sculpting and shaping some foam. (Pictures will explain the detail) In building this Jet, I have incorporsted wings with the KFm-4 Airfoil section, substituted laminated 3mm.Corflute for 6mm. Foamboard, used your now very popular method of making silhoutte model planes and used my modelling skills in shaping foam inserts to achieve a very sleek and streamlined model which should fly fast and stable.

Specifications of my Mig-29

Wingspan 28Inches/712mm.

Length 39Inches/990mm.

AUW. 47 oz./1332gms.

Motor Turnigy 3530B 1400Kv. Outrunner

ESC Exceed 65/70 Amp.

Battery Rhino 2150mAh 3S 11.1v 30C Lipo

Servo x 2 Turnigy MG90S 1.8Kg./13.4gr. Metal Gear Servo

Elevons & Ailerons are linked to the one servo.

The Biplane is what I’m continuing my flight training on.

I have also added 2 pics of the FF-15

Paul, thanks for a great resource in your website and keep ‘em coming man!

Hope you enjoy my story and pics.

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to share an email I recieved a while back from a cool Friend of FoamFighters, Noel Soudent from the Netherlands. Noel is a cool and talented person learning CAD Design. He sent me a PDF of an awesome plan for a FoamBoard SU-37. Please see his email and Free PDF plans below.

Many thanks to Noel for shareing his talents with all of us!

———————————————————————————–

Email from Noel:

Hi Paul

I have tried to make a ff sukhoi 37 plan

As this is my first try with a cad program and it is your dayjob I would like you to see what you think of it. and maybe some hints and tips I used a very simple program I could download for free from the internet I haven’t built it yet because Im just in the beginning stage of the plan. And I have not a lot of time left when I finish my dayjob. So have a look and if you like it and you can use it for the foam fighters just do. I would like that very much After this one I will try a mig 29 ff and maybe a mig 21 but that might be a problem cause of the round fuselage maybe foamboard wing surfaces and another foam fuselage

I really enjoy your youtube films.

Regards

> Which 3 planes are the easiest to fly ?
> Please nominate these in order from easiest to hardest
> I can’t wait to fly your Fantastic jets.
> Wow, I love ‘em

> Nadia
>
> Thanks for your intrest in rcFoamFighters planes and for your support by watching our videos and visiting our Blog. Here are the three plane you should build in the order from easiest to fly to more difficult.
>
> FB-28 (slow version)
> Tell your dad to build this one for himself for a real treat:
> FF-SuperNova (130mph+)
> Good luck with your builds and be sure to have fun!
>

——————————————-

Hi Frank,

We built the FB-28 on your recommendation.
Here are a few photos of the plan.
Constructed with 6mm corflute (main wing) and 3mm corflute for everything else. (Estate Agent signs)
We increased the wingspan by 80mm. ( everything else remains the same)
Weighs in at under 800 gram. (AUW)
We used an RCTimer 2212-6 Brushless (2200 Kv) and a 3S liPo (2200mah Turnigy) battery.
40 Amp ESC (Tower-pro) and Hextronic 9 gram servos.
It flies just great.
At the beginning it was a little twitchy because CG was about 6mm too far back
but now we got that all sorted and also backed off the rates a little.

You know, I’d love to see you Guys do a version of the B2 Stealth bomber.
That would be Awesome.
PLEASE Guys, design one and upload the plans
Will you be doing a B2 Stealth soon ?

Thanks, Nadia

I just wanted to share a cool email I got from a viewer , Radek Stus, of the Czech Republic. He made an EPP version of the FF-117. Many thanks to Radek for sharing his story.

Paul

Below is his email:

————————————————————————————

Hi Paul,

first of all let me introduce myself. My name si Radek Stus, I´m from the Czech Republic.
I found your web sites a few weeks ago and after seeing some videos I decided to built the FF-117 according to your plans, because it looked so good!

I bought 8mm EPP board and started working.
After several days I finished the work. The plane didn´t look as good as yours, but it was my first attempt to do something like that, so I was quite satisfied.:-)
But to be honest, I didn´t believe I could fly this plane with my beginner skills (I started flying models at Christmas 2009).

Nevertheless, I was too curious and had to know whether I would keep it in the air for at least a few seconds!:-)
What a surprise was it for me, when my friend threw it in the air and I was able to control it… after a small changes in trimming it flew quite well.

I was using motor Turnigy 28-12 (some 1500 kV), 7″ prop, 1300mAh 3S battery…
The motor sound was noisier than a herd of buffalos:-), but it looked and sounded great in the air!:-)

I just wanted to thank you for your plans. I woudn´t have been able to build it without them!
And I´m also sending some pictures and videos of that FF-117.
I hope, you wouldn´t mind some small changes in the construction!:-)

Thank you once more, Paul!:-)
And I wish you just the best for the future!:-)

Radek Stus,

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to write up a quick announcement to let you all know there are some new plans posted on the “Planes” tab. This is an original plane designed, built and tested by our Colorado Connection, Jake Marshall. Jake really did a wonderful job on bringing this plane to life right out of his own mind. He wanted it to be a plane with an aggressive stance like a real Wolverine! I think Jake did a good job. He was excited and happy to have his plane added to the rcFoamFighters growing list of free plan downloads. Jake was a big help in that he drew most of the plans on his own in AutoCAD. I only had to help with the final details and formatting. I was happy to have the help these busy days, LOL. So I hope you all will enjoy the free plans and plane design Jake made and graciously wanted to share with all of us in the RC community. We look forward to more cool designs coming from Jake and his MESA school team in the future.

Just wanted to do a quick announcement and let you know the Plans for Jon’s Skyfighter V4 are completed and ready for free download.

FF-SkyFighter V4 RC Model Designed by: Jon McCarty
This RC model is an original model designed and developed by Jon. This plane was intended to be a modified version of the SkyFighter Frank Made. The wings have been swept back and the Vertical Stabilizer are now located on the wing tips. The model proved to be a stable and agile platform and even capable of vertical take offs. The original RC model design was made with 15mm 1.9 EPP Foam and covered with fiberglass weave & colored sealing/packing tape. Other materials such as Blue Core Foam may be used to make this model, but will not be “Bulletproof”. FFFTW!!!

Quick write up from Jon about the Plane
The SkyFighter v4 is my take on Franks great design. This plane flies very stable at a wide range of speeds and power set ups. This is currently my favorite plane to fly. Build the tail fins out of something a bit stiffer and stand it on end for vertical take offs. One word of warning, this plane was built and designed with speed in mind. It will fly slow and stable, but does not slow down quickly. The razor sharp wing bevels and low profile design offer very little resistance.

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to do a quick post for the FF-SuperNova and let everyone know that I have finished up the plans for free download under the “Planes” tab.

I was really happy to see how this plane turned out. As I’m sure a lot of you know this plane was based on my older and smaller NovaJet, pretty much my all time favorite scratch built plane I’ve made to date. Well I’m happy to report that this plane is like the old NovaJet, but lives up to its name by being a “Super” version. Bigger, Faster and still flies with the same type of maneuverability and handling.

This is a plane I would only recommend for pilots with a bit of skill and experience. It is a fast and heavy plane and could do a good bit of damage if it got out of control. That is also why I would only recommend flying this plane at flying fields or other secluded, safe places.

Anyway, if you are looking for a fast plane that is also a great flyer I suggest you give the FF-SuperNova a try. This plane really is a blast to fly and always puts a nice grin on my face when I fly it. It is pretty easy to build and didn’t even require any carbon spars. That is if you build it like I did with the 1.9 EPP and covered with the Henry’s type fiberglass weave & adhesive.

Best of luck to anyone who does decide to build one!

Best regards,

Paul
